This week we are working on a few things that should make Jacob seem smarter than his 6 years. The first is his accent. Holy moly! He uses words that actually grate on my last nerve. Have you heard the "word" (and I use that term very loosely) "warsh"? How about "winda"? There's also my favorite, "aint". Now, being from the great state of Arkansas, I KNOW accents and I have heard the above-mentioned "words" from many people, my own family included. But, having received a great education, I have learned how to enunciate my words according to proper english rules. So, when I hear the accents from peers, I cringe with each syllable they utter.
Back to Jacob. Since I have this disdain for the substandard use of the english language, I hate it when my son speaks the very slang that raises the hair on the back of my neck. I try to correct him each and every time he uses "aint" in a sentence. Example: "Mom, I aint going to clean my room." Or, "Mom, aint that a beautiful picture that I drew on your wall?" Or, "Mom, aint we going to clean the windas on the car?" (See how I used two in one sentence?) Anyway, we have been working on cleaning up our language and trying to properly convey our thoughts and feelings.
Next lesson, warshing the pictures off the walls and cleaning the windas on the car. :)

Whew, we're finished with Kindergarten. Now it's time to get to work for next year. Jacob has a few...things he needs to work on. They are keeping his hands to himself, sitting quietly for more than 15 seconds at a time, and coloring within the lines. Now I know Jacob to be a brilliant child (he is, after all, half me), but he needs a little work to be a more successful first grader. I am going to take the weekend off and hit it next week. So, with a little luck, Jacob is going to finish this summer with a new attitude for school and his elementary school future. I, however, will have new entries every day for this blog as Jacob and I tackle this project. Wish us Jacob is so cool. He was one of the lucky kids at school that had the opportunity to go skating as a reward for reading. The school sponsored a contest for those that read the most books in the month of April. The top three readers of each class would get to go skating at the local rink. Jacob worked his tail off, trying to read a lot of books. Needless to say, he loves books. This was not a stretch for him. So, this afternoon I met him at the roller skating rink to celebrate the day with him and his classmates. In my family, most of the birthdays fall in two months, May and July. Today is Jacob's Aunt Lynn's birthday. I asked him to call her and sing the birthday song. He took the phone and did as I asked. But when the call was over, he slumped in his chair and said, "Mom, is this the last one?" Mother's Day came and went again this year. It's a special time for all of us, whether we are mothers or children. But Jacob went to a lot of trouble this year. He worked on several different projects, both at home and at school. I have a plethera of material to show how much he loves me. I received cards, letters, and even a weed that he dug up out of the yard, roots and all. That was the most special because I was required to put it in water, and he checks on it every day. He told me that he hoped it stayed pretty a long time, but if it doesn't he will get me another one to replace it. Yeah for me! Spring is here and along with the rain comes a renewed sense of spirit. I see this in Jacob, as well. |
