Spring is here and along with the rain comes a renewed sense of spirit. I see this in Jacob, as well.
Today Jacob's dad bought some tomato plants to make his own hanging tomato plants. He started just as Jacob got home from school. To make a long story short, Jacob had more fun with the bag of dirt than the prospect of growing something to eat.
This afternoon in the rain, playing in the dirt really reminded me of when I was a kid. My brother, sister and I loved playing in the rain. The muddier the better. Jacob, however, made us look like we didn't know what we were doing.
He asked to play in the rain but I reminded him that we had to plant the tomato first. He held the plant so gently all the way to the barrel outside the front door. But when it came time to dump the soil into the container, Jacob said, "Mom, let me!" I hesitated. But his sweet blue eyes changed my mind in an instant.
I said, "Here ya go, little man," and he commenced to farming. Farming, in the loosest sense of the word.
After a few minutes and a clean-up job of the porch, Jacob was ready to water his plant. I tried to explain to him that God waters our plants sometimes, too, and today was one of those times.
He shrugged his shoulders and said, "Okay. Can I play in the rain?"
I let him, and he played for a half hour. He splashed in the front yard and squealed at the top of his lungs. He was muddy from head to toe. But I loved it. I watched my son do what he does so well, enjoy life and be a kid. A super kid, at that. I am so glad to be his mom.
