Jacob is so cool. He was one of the lucky kids at school that had the opportunity to go skating as a reward for reading. The school sponsored a contest for those that read the most books in the month of April. The top three readers of each class would get to go skating at the local rink. Jacob worked his tail off, trying to read a lot of books. Needless to say, he loves books. This was not a stretch for him. So, this afternoon I met him at the roller skating rink to celebrate the day with him and his classmates.
I watched him skate, fall, skate, accidentally trip other kids, skate, dance (which was particularly funny), fall, fall, skate, and, well, you get the picture. He is only 6 years old. But I think he made my day when he tried his best to help one of the little girls learn how to stop. The concentration on his face was so genuine. He really wanted to help. After a few minutes, he took her out to the floor, held her hand and said, "Watch me. This is how you stop." The little girl intently watched as he skated to the middle off the rink, turned around and barrelled towards her. Her eyes grew wide in anticipation of what exactly he was going to do. He seemed to be skating faster and faster! But, as he neared the wall, he put his toe stop on the floor. He skidded to a stop. His hands flew up in the air, and he proudly said, "And THAT"S how it's done."
She said, "Okay," and skated off. It's a good thing that he doesn't like girls yet. Someday he will be the hero.
