The Tooth Fairy is a close, personal friend of mine. She is lovely. Generous is only one way to describe her gifts. I remember when I was young and she would visit me until I reached the day when I needed braces. At that point, I didn't need her again, there were others who required her attention. But, now I desperately wish she would visit my house and drop off a quarter or two.
Yes, Jacob is about to lose another tooth. This one is particularly stubborn. Almost a year and a half ago, he had the misfortune to learn one of his first lessons in self-control. I dropped him off at the school gym to meet his Pre-K teachers before class. As all five- year-olds do, running was the normal mode of travel from point a to point b. Long story short, he tripped at the last leg of his sprint and fell face first into the brick wall behind the basketball goal. This happened less than three minutes after I left to return home. The school called and I quickly u-turned on Luther road, yelling, "Mommy's on her way!"
Two minutes later,or what seemed to be two hours later, I cradled him in one arm, while calling the dentist with the other hand. I was not hysterical, even though my youngest son was bleeding out the front of his face. Nor was I calculating the overwhelming costs of surgery, braces and other fees that I would be facing in the future because of this accident. I didn't even think of my favorite Razorback shirt that would need to be put in the trash as soon as we left the dentist's office. I did sit and hold my littlest baby and tell him that everything was going to be alright. I was going to make sure of that.
Within a few days, and a few Tylenol later, he was better. But I was still worried because his two front teeth were a little crooked. We visited the dentist and she assured me that this happens all the time and he will pull through it. The only thing I needed to understand was that it would "die" and Jacob had to wiggle it out. That was easy enough. I knew we could handle it.
A year and a half later, Jacob still has his two front teeth. One is dark and occasionally pokes out over his bottom lip in his mouth. I am not kidding. It looks like it has a mind of it's own. After all this time, it probably has grown a brain. He has wiggled and jiggled until that thing is hanging on by a very small thread. I will get it out this weekend if it puts me in the funny farm. I don't know when or where it will come out, but I hope to high-five the Tooth Fairy by Sunday night. It's time, the tooth must go.
I'll even wager this one is worth a trip to Baskin Robbins, with HIS five dollars.
