First grade is rough. At least that's what Jacob told me yesterday. "Mom, this is the hardest grade I've ever had," were the words that came out of his toothless mouth. So, I had the pleasure of spending the day with his first grade class.
I arrived at the school, dreading what the day would bring. Jacob's teacher was excited to see me, and said that I was one of a very small percentage of parents that has ever visited her class. I reminded her that I hated to bother her during work, but Jacob's behavior is what brought me to the school today.
As the day went on, Jacob had a hard time sitting in his seat and focusing on tasks at hand. He did complete his work, and he finished it with time to spare. But, after a while, the whole class became restless, and Jacob was no exception. He needed to get out of his seat, get a drink, touch the smart board, hug the teacher, etc. The whole class was ready to get up and do...something. It was driving me crazy.
Then, the teacher turned on the CD player and all the kids "got down" and danced their tiny little butts off. She had them doing the twist, some jumping jacks and even taught them the "Bump". After 10 minutes of activity, they were pooped! Wow, what a change. They plopped into their tiny chairs, spent of their excess energy. Time to get to work again.
Jacob had a better afternoon, and I am so glad that I got to watch his teacher in action. I have always known that teachers have gifts, little did I know that some could perform magic.
