Ever hear that? I hear it all the time.
"But, Mom this" and "but, Mom that." It never ends.
Today I tried to get a point across, and it didn't work. Imagine that. Here's the story.
Jacob wanted to play video games. He did great at school, and I usually let him do something fun for 30 minutes when he brings home a green for his behavior. But today, we had so much to do after school that we didn't get a chance to get to the videos.
Mr. Personality was so funny in the car. He was so dramatic and I could only laugh. He "really needed" to play.
Then I remembered a story. I started, "Jacob, you know what? When I was 7, I didn't get to play video games when I got a good behavior report at school. I was SUPPOSED to be good at school."
He said, "Really?"
I replied, "Yes, of course. You should try to be good every day, anyway. Then, when you are such a good guy at school for several days, we will go and do something super fun. Your choice."
He stopped crying, fhad an intense look on his face, and put his finger to his lips, as though he was ready to say something thoughtful.
He said, to me, his young mother, "But, Mom. Even if you got a green at school, you couldn't play video games. They didn't have TV's back then."
I said that to my mother once. ONCE.
